Prime Time Shootout Live Running Blog- Rice (NY) vs. Rancocas Valley (NJ)
by Alex Schwartz
The fourth game of the day is also the fourth NJ/NY showdown and the third straight game between a New York Catholic School and a New Jersey public school. Rice (NY) is arguably the best team in the Empire State and is nationally ranked. Miami-signee Durand Scott '09, James Stukes '09, and Shane Southwell '10 are the main men for the Raiders, while American-bound Mike Bersch '09 and Nnamdi Njoku '09 lead the way for the Red Devils, who are one of the top teams in the Garden State, and maybe the best in all of South Jersey. The game is about to begin.
3:35pm- I got caught up with a few things, so I'll just get you up to speed on how the game is going. Rice is ahead 17-9 with 4:15 to go in the half and had a few crowd-leasing plays along the way.
3:39pm- A trey from Mike Bersch '09 has cut the Raiders' lead down to five, 17-12.
3:41pm- It's now 17-15 after another three by Bersch.
3:42pm- A couple free throws from Jermaine Sanders '11 have put Rice up by four with under a minute left in the first half.
3:43pm- Shawn McLendon '09 missed a jumper at the buzzer, so the Red Devils will trail 19-15 after one half of play.
3:58pm- Just over two minutes into the second half Kadeem Jack '10 scored for Rice to make it 21-17. Jonathan Williams '09 then scored on an uncontested layup to make it a six-point game.
4:00pm- James Stukes '09 hit a pair from the stripe to put the Raiders up 25-17 with under five minutes left in the third quarter.
4:01pm- An old-fashioned three points from Darreck Bender '09 have cut Rice's lead down to five, 25-20.
4:03pm- Rice is ahead 29-20 midway through the third period of play.
4:06pm- A bucket down low by Durand Scott '09 put the Raiders up by 11, but RV quickly answered, making it 31-22 with under three minutes left in quarter.
4:11pm- Rice is running away with this game, and now leads 46-22, scoring a deuce just before the end of the third quarter. The Raiders went on a 15-0 run to close out the third period of action.
4:17pm- Durand Scott and the Rice Raiders have pretty much taken over this game, leading 52-25 with 5:35 to go.
4:18pm- An RV bucket in the paint has made it 52-27.
4:23pm- With just 45.3 seconds to go, Rice is up 58-35.
4:25pm- The final horn has sounded and Rice has a 61-35 win, as Sanders nailed a trey just before the game ended.
4:26pm- Mike Bersch was named MVP for Rancocas Valley, scoring 12 points on four three-pointers,while Durand Scott was the recipient of the trophy for Rice, dropping 17 points.
4:44pm- I spoke with Kadeem Jack after the game. Also, it appears that the players wore different numbers than what was in the book, so some of the names I listed were incorrect. My apologies.
