Prime Time Shootout Day Three Game Predictions

by Alex Schwartz

Saturday, 12:30pm- Our Savior New American (NY) vs. Northern Guilford (NC)
This is the lone game at Villanova that does not have a Pennsylvania team in it, but that does not mean it is lacking star power. OSNA has a gifted, but somewhat under the radar guard, Rayner Moquete '09, who is more than capable of filling up a stat sheet. Chris Hampton '10 provides good help for Moquete, but the team lacks a true low post threat. As North Carolina's lone team in the event, Northern Guilford has a lot to prove, and has the weapons to do so. Jacob Lawson '11 is a big-time sophomore, while Jonathan Frye '10, Asad Lamot '10, and Michael Neal '10 are talented juniors. Like OSNA, the Nighthawks do not have a major pure low post game, as the 6'7 Lawson is the lone player above 6'5. OSNA is a storied program that is good year in and year out, and will not go down easily, and if the guards play to potential, the Pioneers may be able to head home with a W.
Prediction- Northern Guilford by eight, 70-62 . . . A tight game throughout will wind up as a win for the team from the Tar Heel State

Saturday, 2:00pm EST- Pennsbury (PA) vs. Norristown Area (PA)

This should be a great game between two quality Pennsylvania public school squads. The Falcons of Pennsbury are led by West Virginia-signee Dalton Pepper '09, an athletic, physical specimen with a knack for putting the ball in the hole. Ed DiRugeris '09, Marcus Healey '09, football star Dante Devine '10, and Jesse Krasna '10 are also talented ballers. Pennsbury's main problem is a lack of height, as the 6'5 Pepper is one of only two players above 6'3. Norristown is also small, with no one above 6'4, so both teams will have to rely on guard play. The Eagles are led by Temple-bound Khalif Wyatt '09, a big-time scorer who can stroke it from deep. Lorenzo Christmas '09 and Sheldon Mayer '10 are also quality players. Norristown isn't quite as talent-laden as Pennsbury, but is a very good team nonetheless.
Prediction- Pennsbury by twelve, 75-63 . . . Led by Pepper, Pennsbury will get the W and pull away late

Saturday, 3:30pm EST- Lower Merion (PA) vs. Coatesville (PA)

Although Lower Merion is most well-known for being the alma mater of NBA superstar Kobe Bryant, the team has some talent nowadays too. Led by Richmond-bound Greg Robbins '09 and Harley Williamson '09, Lower Merion has a multitude of players 6'1 and above, and has had a very good year thus far. For Coatesville, Jahmahl Slater '09 leads the way. Slater and Alex Reed '09 will be a lot for Lower Merion—which has no one above 6'6—to handle, as the duo stands 6'9 and 6'8 respectively. If Slater has a good game and Coatesville can contain Robbins, the Red Raiders may be able to get the win, but it sure won't be easy, as Lower Merion is very well coached.
Prediction- Lower Merion by five, 63-58 . . . A big game from Robbins will give Lower Merion the win

Staurday, 5:00pm EST- Camden Catholic (NJ) vs. Malvern Prep (PA)
The Irish of Camden Catholic have been one of the surprise teams on New Jersey this year, boasting a fantastic record and a lofty ranking in the state. In fact, Camden Catholic may well have its sights set on a Tournament of Champions birth, though that is far down the road. Tim Crawford '10 and Gerry Wixted '10 are probably the team's top two players, and they are certainly its biggest, as both stand 6'6. Malvern Prep has just three seniors and is led by a strong sophomore class that includes Lamon Church '11 and Dequann Walker '11. The squad from New Jersey is just more talented though, so Malvern Prep will have to play a very, very good game.
Prediction- Camden Catholic by sixteen, 78-62 . . . Camden Catholic will have too much firepower for Malvern Prep to handle

Saturday, 6:30pm EST- Plymouth-Whitemarsh (PA) vs. Holy Ghost Prep (PA)
This game has the potential to be one of the event’s biggest blowouts, as Plymouth-Whitemarsh is a high-quality team that is one of the Keystone State’s finest, while Holy Ghost Prep is a mid-level team that lacks any true stars. Although Holy Ghost is a solid quad, P-W is one a whole other level. Led by 6’9 CJ Aiken ’10, 6’6 Jaylen Bond ’11, and 6’4 Damien Williams ’12, Plymouth-Whitemarsh has a big and imposing frontline. Although the guard play is not quite as good, P-W should be able to hold the Firebirds pretty much in check.
Prediction- Plymouth-Whitemarsh by twenty-one, 82-61 . . . Aiken, Bond, and Williams will dominate for P-W

Saturday, 8:00pm EST- North Catholic (PA) vs. Jamesville-DeWitt (NY)
This has the makings of a great game, as one of New York’s finest squares off against one of Pennsylvania’s best. North Catholic’s main man is Rakeem Christmas ’11, a big man who is regarded as one of the top sophomores in America. Mike Terry ’10, Woody Redding ’10, Bob Makor ’10, Jack O’Neill ’10, and Xavier Harris ’11 are also talented in their own right. Every player on North Catholic except for Redding is at least 6’1, with Christmas—an imposing defender—standing 6’9. Brandon Triche ’09, a future member of the Syracuse Orange, is the key player for Jamesville-DeWitt. Alshawn Hymes ’09 is a talented senior as well, while Dajuan Coleman ’12 is a 6’8 freshman and Mychal Weekes ’09 is 6’7. J-D has already trounced NYC powerhouse Lincoln (NY) this year, so clearly the Red Rams are for real. Both squads had great seasons in 2007-08 and have continued the success this season as well.
Prediction- Jamesville-DeWitt by two, 73-71 . . . It will be tight throughout, but J-D will come up with the win
