Day two of the Prime Time Shootout is about to begin. The Lions of Academy of the New Church (PA) are meeting the Mustangs of Bishop McNamara (MD). ANC is lead by a pair of underclassmen: 6'11 Malcolm Gilbert '11 and 6'5 Savon Goodman '12. For Bishop McNamara, it's all about the seniors. Talib Zanna '09, who stands 6'9, is headed to Pitt, while 63 Rashad Whack '09 is bound for George Mason. The ball is about to be tipped.
6:02pm- Talib Zanna '09 missed two shots at the line after being fouled by Malcolm Gilbert '11 of ANC. Gilbert then scored at the ither end, so it's 2-0 Lions through one minutes of play.
6:04pm- Both teams are struggling to hit shots, and Gilbert is playing well in the post on both ends.
6:05pm- Warren Gillis '10 has nailed back-to-back treys, giving ANC an 8-0 lead.
6:06pm- After almost three minutes of play, Bishop McNamara is on the board, as Zanna hit the first of two at the line. Rashad Whack '09 can't buy a bucket for the Mustangs.
6:07pm- Bishop McNamara has taken a timeout with 4:27 to go in the first quarter, trailing 10-1, as Malcolm Lites '11 just scored for the Mustangs. Out of the timeout, Brandon Coleman '10 scored for the Mustangs, but Kenny Ross '09 answered with a long jumper.
6:08pm- Coleman scored again. It's 12-5 ANC through 5:30 of play. The game has been extremely sloppy, with a lot of turnovers by both teams.
6:09pm- Zanna can't get anything going in the post, as the 6'11 Gilbert is using his size effectively to block and alter shots. He has a number of offensive rebounds ans has taken quite a few shots in the low post, but just can't put the ball in the hole.
6:11pm- Gilbert just picked up his second foul with 1:26 to go in the first quarter, but is staying in the game, though Zanna has come out.
6:14pm- A tip-in from Gilbert that just beat the buzzer had given ANC a 16-6 lead through eight minutes of play.
6:16pm- Ibn Muhammed '11 knocked down a three for McNamara to open the scoring in the second period of action, making it a 16-9 game.
6:17pm- Zanna used his athleticism to get around Gilbert and score in the post, cutting the ANC lead down to five with about 6:30 to go in the half.
6:18pm- A Zanna block led to a Tyler Shipe '11 steal, and the sophomore dished it to Marcus Pilgrim '10 for a basket to make it a 16-13. ANC answered and then McNamara got two from the line to make it 18-15.
6:21pm- It's 20-17 in favor of the Lions with 4:15 to go in the first half of action.
6:23pm- Pilgrim hit a trifecta for McNamara, but then De'Sean Popley '09 nailed a three as well, so it's 25-20 ANC.
6:24pm- At the other end, Zanna missed a dunk, and Ross converted it into an ANC basket at the other end, leading to a McNamara timeout with 2:19 to go in the second quarter. The Lions lead 27-20.
6:26pm- Eddie Bieker '09 made two free throws, stretching the ANC lead to nine, 29-20, with under two minutes left on the clock.
6:27pm- Lawrence Smith '09 knocked down a pair of free throws, but Bieker answered with a deuce, so it's 31-22.
6:29pm- Despite playing much of the second quarter without Malcolm Gilbert, who has three fouls, ANC is up 31-22 at the break. Savon Goodman '12 has yet to enter the contest for the Lions.
6:43pm- With his team down 33-22, Zanna missed two at the line. The Pitt-bound big man is really struggling at the stripe.
6:44pm- A pair of baskets from McNamara has cut the ANC lead down to seven, 33-26, with just over five minutes to go in the third quarter.
6:45pm- Bieker grabbed an offensive rebound, and did a nice up-and-under for an ANC basket.
6:46pm- A nice move from Whack led to a bucket for McNamara. The Mustangs then scored once again—this time it was Coleman—to cut the ANC lead down to five, 35-30, with just over 11 minutes to go in regulation.
6:49pm- Jonathan Riles '11 scored for the Lions to put his team up by seven.
6:51pm- A pull-up J from Kenny Ross has made it a nine-point lead for ANC.
6:52pm- The Lions have continued their impressive run, and now lead by 11, 41-30.
6:53pm- Zanna hit a pair from the line to bring the ANC lead back down to single digits, 41-32. That will be the score at the end of the third quarter.
6:55pm- Back-to-back buckets from Bishop McNamara to open the fourth quarter have cut the deficit to five, 41-36, with 7:15 to go.
6:57pm- Coleman scored over the 6'11 Gilbert to make it a three-point game, 41-38, with over six minutes to play.
6:58pm- Rashad Whack hit a couple from the line, so it's now 41-40 with just over six minutes to go. After a steal, Brendan Bazilio '09 scored for McNamara, putting the Mustangs up 42-41. The boys from Maryland are on a 12-0 and have outscored ANC 10-0 this quarter.
6:59pm- A deuce from Zanna has made it a 14-0 run for Bishop McNamara, which leads 44-41. Kenny Ross was then called for an offensive foul in the backcourt, giving the ball back to the Mustangs.
7:01pm- Warren Gillis hit a three to tie the game at 44, ending a 14-0 Bishop McNamara run, and giving ANC its first points of the fourth quarter.
7:02pm- Coleman connected on a pair from the stripe, and then the Mustangs got a steal, leading to a bucket from Pilgrim, so it's now 48-44 in favor of McNamara.
7:04pm- Although he has struggled on offense in the second half, Gilbert has been a shot blocking machine in this one, and he alters many of the shots he doesn't block.
7:05pm- The Bishop McNamara Mustangs are leading the Academy of the New Church Lions 48-44 with 1:59 to play.
7:06pm- ANC got a turnover, but gave it back to McNamara on the backcourt, who took advantage of the opportunity. Muhammed scored to put the Mustangs up by a half dozen, 50-44. ANC then turned the ball over again, but McNamara couldn't convert. It's a six-point game with 1:12 to go in regulation.
7:08pm- Gillis hit another trey for ANC. The junior has all six of his team's points in the fourth quarter. That triple ended an 18-3 run by the Mustangs. ANC then took a timeout, down 50-47, with 54.5 seconds to play.
7:10pm- Bazilio is at the stripe for McNamara for one-and-one after being fouled by Gillis with 53.3 to go.
7:11pm- The senior made both shots, so it's now 52-47. At the other end, Talib Zanna forced a turnovewr and was fouled by Ross with exactly 40 seconds to go.
7:12pm- Zanna missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Warren Gillis threw the ball away, and Ross fouled Pilgrim, putting him at the line where he made both shots with 32.3 to go.
7:13pm- Warren Gillis has connected on yet another three-ball. The junior has cut the McNamara lead down to four, 54-50, with the clock showing 16.2.
7:14pm- Riles fouled Muhammed with 15 seconds left, sending the sophomore to the stripe, where he made both shots.
7:16pm- A Ross turnover gave McNamara the ball back with about seven seconds left, ending the game. The Mustangs have won 56-50.
7:26pm- Kenny Ross' 12 points earned him MVP honors for Academy of the New Church. Brandon Coleman received the honor for Bishop McNamara. After the game I caught up with Talib Zanna and Malcolm Gilbert.
