Prime Time Shootout Live Running Blog- Plainfield (NJ) vs. Piscataway (NJ)

by Alex Schwartz

The last game of the evening is already one quarter done. It's a New Jersey public school matchup between Plainfield and Piscataway. The crowd is really into the game, as the schools are both close to the RAC. The gym has been loud and there are more people here for this one than any of the other three. Pitt-commit Isaiah Epps '10, Tyrone Johnson '11, and Anthony Baskerville '09 lead the Cardinals of Plainfield, who are all about guard play. For the Piscataway Chiefs its their interior play—led by Temple-commit (football) Aaron Hush '09, Tristan Benjamin '09, and Wayne Newsom '10—that has carried them to just one loss so far.

10:20pm- With 5:45 to go in the second quarter, Plainfield is up 26-9, and has complete control of this game.

10:22pm- Jeff Adkins '09 made a pair of free throws for Piscataway, and then Isaiah Epps '10 scored at the other end, putting the Cardinals' lead back up to 17 with under five minutes left in the half, 28-11.

10:24pm- Adkins made a nice move to get to the hole, but his shot was swatted away by Khalid Muhammed '09.

10:26pm- Thomas Bennett '09 made the second of two free throws, but Plainfield answered with a deuce to take a 30-12 lead.

10:27pm- Isaiah Epps' right thumb is wrapped up, and from what I hear he hurt it in the last game. It does not appear to be anything serious.

10:28pm- Tyrone Johnson '11 drove hard to the rack, hit a shot, and was fouled hard. In fact, Pway was called for an intentional foul. Johnson hit two shots at the line, putting the Cardinals ahead by 22 points, 34-12.

10:31pm- A block by Piscataway led to a bucket from Adkins off a feed from Tristan Benjamin '09 at the other end.

10:32pm- Benjamin scored off an inbounds pass from Maclolm Griggs '10. The Plainfield lead is now 18.

10:33pm- Tristan Benjamin is really trying to get the Chiefs back into this one. He drove hard to he hoop, and drew a blocking foul. The senior made both shots at the line. Pway is on a 6-0 run, and now trails 34-18 with just over one minute to play in the half.

10:34pm- A trey from the corner by Thomas Bennett has cut the Pfield lead to 13.

10:35pm- It's now halftime, and Plainfield is ahead 34-21. Piscataway ended the half on a 9-0 run to get back into the game.

10:48pm- Ladies and gentlemen, we've got ourselves a ball game. Pway started the second half with four points, all from Wayne Newsom '10, cutting the lead to single digits, 34-25.

10:49pm- A Pfield three ended a 13-0 Pway run. Newsom countered with another bucket. He has all six of the Chiefs' points this half. Plainfield is up 37-27.

10:50pm- I'm not sure what Wayne Newsom did at halftime, but he is on fire. He just scored yet again to make it 37-29. He has all eight of Pway's points this half. Newsom has missed two and-ones, including this most recent bucket, but the Chiefs kep it alive, and Aaron Hush '09 was fouled.

10:51pm- Aaron Hush hit the first of two shots, Pway got the offensive board, and Newsom scored yet again, leading to a Plainfield timeout. The Chiefs are trailing by just five points, 37-32. The Chiefs are winning this half 11-3 so far, and Newsom has 10 of the points. Pway had trailed by as much as 22, when they were down 34-12. Since then, the Chiefs are on an incredible 20-3 run.

10:53pm- Muhammed scored for Pfield, and then Pway countered with a triple to make it a four-point game, 39-35. The Cardinals were then called for an offensive foul, giving the Chiefs the ball back.

10:54pm- Newsom was fouled  Muhammed—his fourth of the game—with 4:22 to go in the third quarter. The junior made both shots to cut the Pfield lead down to just two points, 39-37. The run is now 25-4. Newsom has 12 of the Chiefs' 16 points this quarter.

10:57pm- Epps has scored for Plainfield. Bennett then hit a jumper for Pway. It's 41-39.

10:58pm- Bennett got a steal, drove down the court, and was fouled going up for layup, so he will have two shots and a chance to tie the game.

10:59pm- Bennett missed both shots at the stripe, so it remains a two-point affair. At the other end, Antoinne Beverley '09 fouled Tyrone Johnson, sending him to the charity stripe, where he made both shots to stretch the Cadinals' lead to four, 43-39.

11:01pm- A deuce by Aaron Riggins '09 of Piscataway and then two free throws from Epps have made it a 45-41 game with just under two minutes left in the third quarter.

11:02pm- Mar Rose '09 of Pway was called for an offensive foul to give the ball back to Plainfield.

11:03pm- Johnson hit a layup for the Cardinals, who now lead by six, 47-41.

11:04pm- Aaron Riggins scored for Pway to cut the lead to four, 47-43. At the other end, Johnson was fouled with the clock showing 0:00, so he has two shots from the line, with no one lined up. The sophomore made both shots to give the Cardinals a 49-43 advantage through three quarters.

11:08pm- Newsom opened the fourth quarter's scoring by making a pair of free throws, cutting the Pfield lead to four, 49-45.

11:09pm- Isaiah Epps knocked down a pair from the stripe with 7:05 to play, making it a 51-45 lead for the Cardinals. At the other end, Newsom was fouled by Johnson and will go to the line for a one-and-one. Both sides have nine team fouls.

11:10pm- Newsom, who now has 15 points in the second half, made the first of two shots. The Chiefs are behind by a score of 51-45.

11:11pm- Both teams were called for traveling violations, and then Pfield scored on an easy bucket down low to take a 53-46 lead with about six minutes to go.

11:12pm- Benjamin missed a trifecta, but Aaron Hush grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled going up for a shot with 5:31 remaining. The football star hit the second of two shots. It's 53-47 in favor of Pfield.

11:15pm- Anthony Baskerville '09, who has been very quiet, used a nice pump fake to get open for a mid-range J that he knocked down. At the other end, Tristan Benjamin made a three, slicing the Cardinals' cushion down to five points, 55-50.

11:16pm- Baskerville made the second of two free throws with just over 4:30 to go, putting the Cardinals up 56-50.

11:17pm- Benjamin was fouled by Baskerville while shooting a three. The senior connected on his second and third attempts. It's 56-52 with just over four minutes to play.

11:20pm- Newsom scored a bucket down low to cut the Cardinals' lead down to a half dozen, 60-54, with 2:30 remaining in regulation.

11:22pm- With a six-point lead and under two minutes to go, Plainfield is slowing it down and wasting clock.

11:23pm- Epps is at the stripe, and made both shots, with 1:44 to go after being fouled by Bennett. It's 62-54 in favor of the Cardinals.

11:24pm- Baskerville fouled Adkins with 1:29 to go, sending the senior to the line with 1:29 left, where he connected on the first of two shots, cutting the Pfield lead to seven, 62-55.

11:25pm- Benjamin fouled Muhammed with 1:23 to go, and the senior missed both free throws. Piscataway was unable to cash in on the opportunity, turning the ball over at the other end.

11:26pm- Muhammed was fouled by Beverley with 1:05 left, and he missed both shots again.

11:27pm- Beverley grabbed an offensive rebound after Benjamin missed a trey. He was fouled going back up, and hit the second of two shots.

11:28pm- The Chiefs, trailing 62-56 with 46.1 seconds left, have called a timeout.

11:29pm- With 42.1 to go, Johnson is at the stripe after being fouled by Bennett.
