Favors to Georgia Tech; Epps to Pitt
by Alex Schwartz
Unfortunately, I don't have the ESPNU channel, so I had to check the ESPNU site to see find out where Derrick Favors '09 of South Atlanta (GA) had committed this evening. Favors, a bruising 6'9 big man who recently told me that he was down to Georgia Tech, Georgia, and North Carolina State, announced his college plans tonight at 6:30pm. Just as Northstar Basketball has predicted all along, the big man selected Georgia Tech over the Bulldogs and Wolfpack. Paul Hewitt and Co. have a fantastic class of 2009 recruiting haul, highlighted by Favors and talented point guard Mfon Udofia. Speaking of Udofia, I caught up with him earlier today to ask him if he had any word on where Derrick would end up—Favors was unavailable yesterday—and he informed me that he "hadn't spoken to him." I asked him if he had a hunch, to which he replied, "Well, you know I'm going to say [Georgia] Tech," though he said he did not have any information to back it up, saying that Favors was "keeping it a secret." Well, it's no longer a secret, as arguably the best player in America is going to stay in his home state and play for Paul Hewitt—possible for only one year—as a Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket.
In other big recruiting news, Isaiah Epps '10 of Plainfield (NJ), a 6'2 combo guard, has verbally committed to the Pitt Panthers, news I first saw on Scout. Epps is part of a Plainfield team that will compete for the Group IV state crown, and is arguably the third best junior in the Garden State. For a long time it seemed as if Epps' recruitment would come down to Pitt and Maryland, and ultimately, Jamie Dixon and Co. scored big time with this talented player.
I will do my best to get quotes from both of theses players regarding their college decisions.
