WWPS vs. WWPN; Scouting Report on Austin Witter

by Alex Schwartz

I had the opportunity to check out a big-time local Mercer County rivalry game tonight between the West Windsor-Plainsboro South (NJ) Pirates and the West Windsor-Plainsboro North (NJ) Knights. The Pirates are led by arguably the best player in the Colonial Valley Conference, 6'6 power forward Austin Witter '09, while the Knights are paced by a trio of seniors, Darren Allen '09 (8 points), Brandon Byrd '09 (10 points), and Garvin Brown '09 (14 points). North was a heavy underdog in the game, but trailed just 18-17 at halftime, and held Witter scoreless through the first sixteen minutes. In the second half, the big man caught fire and blew the game open with some help from teammates Dan Block '09 (6 points) and Jack Dennehy '10 (13 points), helping South cruise to a 56-44 win over its rival. Witter led all scorers with 21 points, knocking down three triples, all of which were in his 17-point third quarter. He nearly had a triple-double, as he had 14 rebounds and 9 assists to go along with the 21 points. Here are my thoughts on Witter:

The fact that Austin Witter is about 6'6 combined with his lack of bulk and his skill set projects him as a wing at the college level. The main thing that stands out about Witter is his passing ability. For a kid his size at his age, Austin does a fantastic job of distributing the rock, and this is displayed by his nine dimes tonight. Although the big man is confident bringing the ball up and has a solid handle for a player his size, his hands—catching the ball both off passes and on the boards—need work. He is rail thin and needs to add muscle and get tougher. Witter has long arms and solid ups, both of which help him to do a nice job of blocking shots. Witter is a streaky shooter, but can knock it down. In addition, he is an overall solid athlete, yet is inconsistent. This evening he was scoreless in the first half, then had 17 in the third quarter, and finished with four in the final period. Witter has an intriguing skill set, so it will be interesting to see what level he ends up playing at.
