New Jersey Prep Schools Update
by Alex Schwartz
Although many of New Jersey's public and non-public schools have yet to begin play, a number of prep schools have already begun their seasons. The Prep A division is made up of Blair Academy, Hun, Peddie, Lawrenceville, and St. Benedict's Prep (the school's "other" team). Prep B features Montclair Kimberley, Solomon Schechter, Rutgers Prep, PDS, The Pennington School, Collegiate, Gill St. Bernard's, Morristown Beard, and more. Here's a rundown of some of the schools' seasons thus far:
- St. Benedict's Prep: The defending Prep A champs lost to Hun early in the season, but came right back and beat the Raiders en route to the Peddie School Invitational Tournament championship, where the Gray Bees defeated Peddie in the finals. The squad features players such as Kelvin Amayo '11, Steven Frankoski '09, and Xavier Munford '10.
- Peddie: The Falcons did well in making the championship of it's tournament, the aforementioned PSIT, and has been solid thus far, led by Michael Perry and John Golden.
- Hun: Despite not having DeOliver Davis '10 due to injury, the Raiders are having a nice season, that includes wins over Solebury Prep (PA) and St. Benedict's Prep. The team, which has Rice-signee Egheosa Edomwonyi '09, lost a lot of talent from last year, including Lance Goulbourne to Vanderbilt, but appears to be stellar nonetheless, despite a loss in the second go-around with St. Benedict's.
- Lawrenceville: Leonard Hayes '09 and Hayk Gyokchyan '09 are the key players for the Big Red who have had a solid showing thus far, and will again be a quality program featuring quality students.
- Blair Academy: The Bucs have Rutgers-bound big man Austin Johnson '09 and solid guard Hakeem Harris '11, and though it's not the Villanueva/Deng glory days, Blair is a nice team.
- Montclair Kimberley: After losing superstar Kyrie Irving '10 to St. Patrick's (NJ) via transfer, the defending Prep B champs will be in for a down year by their standards.
- Rutgers Prep: Jordan Robinson '09 leads a talented Argonauts squad that is currently 1-1 with a home loss to The Pennington School and then a road win at Collegiate. Robinson, who is averaging 30 points per game, scored his 1,000th career point late in the game versus Pennington—he had 28 on the day—and then dropped 32 on Collegiate, including eight threes. The Argonauts have some nice size too, and will compete for a Prep B championship. The team hosts PDS tomorrow in what should be a very good game.
- PDS: The Panthers' 1-4 record is not what they would like it to be, but that is also because the team lost to two tough schools in the PSIT, Peddie and Brunswick (CT), and the team will still be aiming for a Prep B title. In a win against George School (PA) in the first game of the season, Joe Rogers '09 scored his 1,000th career point. PDS lost to The Pennington School tonight despite 21 points from Rogers. Kenny Holzhammer '10 did not suit up in this one, and the sharpshooter should be a factor next time the teams meet.
- Gill St. Bernard's: After being off the radar in recent, Gill has put together a nice, young team with good size that has got to be considered one of the front runners for the Prep B title.
- The Pennington School: The Red Raiders are 5-0 so far, and all of their wins have been by double-digits, including three by over 25. Harold Spears '10 has three double-doubles and is averaging 23 points per game. The squad traveled to PDS and knocked off the Panthers this evening, as Spears had 27 points. We will see how good the team truly is when it takes on its first public school foe, Hillsburough (NJ), in the Hopewell Tournament on December 26.
- Solomon Schechter: Jordan Marcus is gone to Ithaca, and the team is left without a superstar, but Sandy Pyonin is a good coach, and has already seen his team knock off a quality PDS squad.
