News & Notes

- According to NJHoops, David Laury '09 of The Nia School (NJ) has verbally committed to Western Kentucky. Laury is a 6'7 wing who was receiving a lot of mid-major interest. This is a nice pickup for the Hilltoppers' new staff.

- ZagsBlog has an update on Shaq Thomas '10 of Montclair (NJ) that says the athletic small forward has been denied a waiver to play this year after transferring from Paterson Catholic (NJ).

- ZagsBlog also has an update on one of the nation's best players, Dominic Cheek '09 of St. Anthony's (NJ). The article states that the 6'6 shooting guard will be making his college decision this week. Cheek's final five are Kansas, Memphis, Pitt, Rutgers, and Villanova, and Northstar Basketball recently projected Cheek to pick the Wildcats. It will come down to Villanova and Kansas, and it's really a toss up between the two.

- According to Rivals, big man DeMarcus Cousins '09 of LeFlore (AL) has officially de-committed from UAB. Cousins, one of the top players in the nation, did not ink with the Blazers during the early signing period because UAB would not put a clause in his NLI stating that he would be let out should current UAB Head Coach Mike Davis leave the school.

- I was at the RAC today for Rutgers' loss at the hands of America East foe Binghamton, and it was an interesting experience. I was sitting not that far behind the RU bench, and thus it was easy see the body and facial expressions of the players. Frankly, the Scarlet Knights—who have now lost non-conference home games to St. Bonaventure, Lehigh, and Binghamton—just did not seem into the game. There were just two players, Hamady N'Diaye and Mike Rosario, who seemed to really care, while most of the others were just out of it the whole time. Fred Hill has a lot of talent on his roster and the team still has time to turn it around—much like the RU football team who started 1-5 and is now 7-5—but it will be tough. Christian Morris, a freshman who played zero minutes today and did not even remove his warm-up, is transferring out of the Big East school, according to Jeff Goodman, so that takes away a big man from the team. Although RU really struggled, Binghamton played great for about 35 of the 40 minutes and deserved the victory. The Bearcats put an exclamation point on the huge upset with 0.5 ticks left when one of their players caught an alley-oop well below the hoop, brought it up and reverse jammed it. Honestly, it was an amazing dunk!

- A late signing week update for you: St. Francis (PA) inked Umar Shannon of Atlantic City (NJ) and Ron Johnson of Gettsyburg (PA).
