Darien Hutton- Local Star Seeking a Spot in College

by Alex Schwartz

Yesterday night I spoke with Darien Hutton '09 of Ewing (NJ). Hutton is a 6'4, 170 pound senior small forward who runs with the Pennsylvania Blue Devils for AAU ball, which is the program that West Virginia-signee Dalton Pepper '09 of Pennsbury (PA) ran with at the 2008 Fall Jam Fest. Hutton is a four year player at Ewing, and will end his career after this season as a two-year starter. In his junior year, Darien said he averaged about 14 points and five or more rebounds, adding that he went off for 34 points in one contest last season. Hutton, who plays "just basketball" for the Ewing Blue Devils, was a Second Team All-Colonial Valley Conference (CVC) selection last year, an impressive accomplishment, as the conference had some talented ballers such as Lorenzo Freeman of Trenton Central (NJ) (now at Edison Academy, which is also in New Jersey) and Austin Witter of West Windsor-Plainsboro South (NJ). Hutton, who is a part of the People-to-People leadership program at his school, is currently going through the college process, and is applying to schools such as Howard, Drexel, Rider, and UMBC, and is "still looking." He not being heavily recruited at this point, yet is seeking an opportunity to earn a "DI or DII . . . scholarship." The senior small forward says the strongest point of his game is "coming off the dribble, [his] drive, going to the basket." As for his weakest point, Hutton said the following: "Ball handling, I [have] got to work on that." At 6'4, Darien has a nice mid-range jumper, which is a lost art nowadays. As well, he has nice ups, though his rebounding could use some work. While Darien Hutton is not a household name right now, he may well be worth taking a look at, as he is a tough player who has had a nice career thus far, and has a year to make it even better.
