Andre Gillette to Niagara; Darryl McCoy to Drexel
by Alex Schwartz
I received word within the last hour or so from sources close to the respective situations, that Andre "Scooter"
Gillette '09, a big man from Neumann-Goretti (PA), "committed to [Niagara] tonight," and that Darryl McCoy '09, a big man from Harftord (CT), has pledged his services to Drexel. The Purple Eagles grabbing Gillette is a huge pickup, as "Scooter" is a quality low post player with good upside who had the opportunity to play in the A10 and passed it up. According to Scout, Andre is the lone player in the class of 2009 committed to the MAAC school. The Dragons' addition of McCoy is interesting, as they were involved with both him and Gillette, and the source close to the McCoy situation said, "since [Drexel got McCoy], Gillette just committed to Niagara." What makes it even more interesting is that Hartford is the same school that produced Marcus Camby, who went on to play at UMass, where James "Bruiser" Flint and Mike Connors were coaches. Flint is now the head coach at Drexel, while Connors is the associate head coach. Darryl is the third player to choose Drexel from the class of 2009, following in the footsteps of forward Dartaye Ruffin and point guard Shannon Givens. Once again, Andre "Scooter" Gillette has committed to Niagara and Darryl McCoy has committed to Drexel.
