Eddie Griffin Challenge Scouting Reports- New Jersey Sophomores
by Alex Schwartz
Here is my final articles with scouting reports from the 2008 Eddie Griffin Challenge. Have a look at what I saw in some of New Jersey's finest sophomores:
NEW JERSEY SOPHOMORES
MVP- Myles Davis
Hustle/Sportsmanship Award- Khalid Lewis El
Sterling Gibbs '11, Seton Hall Prep (NJ)
The younger brother of current Pitt freshman Ashton Gibbs, Sterling had a nice showing at the EGC. Gibbs, a point guard who seems to move awkwardly around the court, got to the rack with ease on the big stage. Once there though, is when a noticeable issue with Gibbs' game showed. The quick point guard struggled to finish upon getting to the hoop. Many times Sterling would draw contact and get to the charity stripe, yet it was rarely for an and-one as he had a problem scoring with said contact. The sophomore did show a nice up-and-under-esque move and also displayed a good spin move. Overall, it was a solid showing for Sterling, who was key to the NJ squad.
Myles Mack '11, Paterson Catholic (NJ)
Mack, an undersized point guard, showed that he has good court vision, which is obviously key to a floor leader. Myles has good ups, and he actually jumps quite high on his three-point attempts. He is actually a good shooter from beyond the arc, and has a fluid overall stroke. Mack had an impressive showing at The Barn on the Rutgers campus on this day.
Myles Davis '11, St. Peter's Prep (NJ)
Davis, who attended St. Benedict's for his freshman year, will be a huge help to St. Peter's Prep, after transferring there over the summer. Davis was fantastic at the Eddie Griffin Challenge, helping to keep the Garden State in the game throughout by knocking down a number of treys. It was Davis' shooting touch that really stood out. He is a good, fluid, three-point shooter, and that was the main part of his game on display last Sunday.
Desmond Hubert '11, New Egypt (NJ)
Many people consider the 6'8 Hubert to be a very intriguing prospect with a lot of potential, and showed just that in the EGC. Although Desmond was inconsistent around the post, his long and lanky body makes one wonder just how much he can develop. While the NJ standout showed that he is by no means a finished product, watching him play makes one think that he can possibly become a special player.
Luke Piotrowski '11, Atlantic Christian (NJ)
This was not a good day for Piotrowski. The long and lanky big man committed a number of fouls, and actually was unable to play in the fourth quarter due to fouling out. Luke, who did not show the talent that led to him being selected for the event, has long arms, that one would think he could use to be a nice shot blocker.
Jarrod Davis '11, Lakewood (NJ)
Davis is a gifted wing who needs to add some weight to his frame, but certainly has talent. Jarrod, who is a good athlete, displayed that he has a good shooting motion. Despite that, he struggled to consistently knock down his free throws. Although Davis had a stellar outing at the EGC, he did not fully show just how good he is.
Khalid Lewis El '11, Trenton Catholic (NJ)
Lewis El was one of the most impressive players in the sophomore game of the Eddie Griffin Challenge, but for different reasons than many of the other standouts. Although he did not score many points, Khalid was key in leading both comeback attempts from the NJ squad, as he grabbed a number of steals during the course of the game. A quality athlete, Lewis El showed of some flashy passing last Sunday, in addition to displays that he is a hard worker and a hustle player. Khalid did a good job of driving to the rack, and had a tendency to dump the ball off to a post player once he was there. Lewis El, who does not have a true position and can play the one, two, and three, played aggressive defense, never gave up, and kept the NJ squad in the game.
Vaughn Gray '11, Don Bosco Prep (NJ)
A traditional football powerhouse, Don Bosco has a good basketball player on its hands in Gray, but he did not show it at the EGC, as he struggled throughout the game. Vaughn had trouble finishing, though he did do a good job of getting to the hole. Besides that, the sophomore was very quiet.
