Erique Gumbs and Abdul Gaddy on their Decisions
by Alex Schwartz
Yesterday I wrote an article on Erique Gumbs '09 of Caravel Academy (DE) and Isaiah Philmore '09 of John Carroll (MD) committing to Towson and it included numerous quotes from Philmore. Today I caught up with Gumbs, a center who is one
of the best players in the First State. "It's really a good situation for me. I believe the in the direction [that] the program is going. I really trust the coaches and feel comfortable with them. Coach Skeeter [Assistant Coach Eric Skeeters] is a great guy. [Towson has] been there since day one of the recruiting process and truly showed a commitment to me," said Erique of why he picked the Tigers. Gumbs, who had high-major interest probably could have gone to a BCS-level school, yet he chose the Colonial Athletic Association school. Why is that? "[Head] Coach [Pat] Kennedy has a great reputation. He has [sent out] many successful pro players, and Towson is in a good conference where I'll get a chance to play early and often for a very good coach." So what was the key factor in Gumbs' decision? "Trust."
As I mentioned last week in a News & Notes article, Abdul Gaddy '09 of Bellarmine Prep (WA) verbally committed to the Washington Huskies soon after his second de-commitment from Arizona. Gaddy is regarded by many as one
of the nation's premiere players, so it's big for Lorenzo Romar and Co. to keep the point guard in-state. In fact, the location of the school was key in Abdul's decision. The 2008 Boost Mobile Elite 24 Classic participant told me that he picked U-Dub to "stay home and represent for [his] state." Although he did admit to being "real upset" that it did not work out for him to go to Arizona, whom he said "had a really good [2009 recruiting] class," he said that he is "taking it as a sign to stay home." Speaking of that class, the other two players who had been bound for the traditional Pac-10 power, Mike Moser and Solomon Hill, have both de-committed from the Wildcats signed Lute Olsen resigned. I inquired of Gaddy as to whether or not he will try to get Moser and Hill to join him in the Northwest: "I'm [going to] try." So what is Abdul's relationship with the duo like? "I'm real close with Moz [Mike Moser]. . . . Solomon [and I] . . . are cool, so I'm [going to] try to get both." We'll see how that turns out, but either way, the Huskies have one of the most highly regarded players in-state players in a long time coming to town next year.
