Erique Gumbs and Isaiah Philmore to Towson
by Alex Schwartz
I first saw on Scout that both Isaiah Philmore '09 of John Carroll (MD) and Erique Gumbs '09 of Caravel Academy (DE) had committed to Towson. The duo, who both play AAU ball with the Delaware Sharpshooters, are both huge pickups for the CAA school. Back in late July, Philmore told me that South Florida, Virginia Tech, UMass, St. Joseph's, and Providence were his favorites, so clearly that changed. Also in late July, Gumbs, a center, let me know that his top three were George Mason, Providence, and Towson, leading to my projection in early October that he would go to Towson. The Tigers already have Will
Adams of Imhotep Charter (PA) in the fold in their class of 2009 recruiting class, and Scout lists Nick Diatta as a Towson pledge as well. "We can be very good and we could win the conference three out of four years," said Philmore of what the team will be able to accomplish when I caught up with him via text message this eventing. I went on to inquire of him what he felt the Tigers could do on a national level, to which he replied, "I have no clue. We will see, . . . but we should be in the . . . [NCAA] Tournament." Philmore claimed numerous high-major offers when we spoke over the summer, so I asked him why he did not go that route: "Because I wanted to help build a program. It's more fun." The wing mentioned that he chose Towson because "he just liked it," adding, "my boy Erique [Gumbs] is going there. It's also close to home." Watch out for Philmore, Gumbs, and their fellow Tigers down the road because the CAA school is putting together a very nice recruiting class.
