Eddie Griffin Challenge Scouting Reports- Philadelphia Sophomores

by Alex Schwartz

I've already given scouting reports from the 2008 Eddie Griffin Challenge on the Philadelphia seniors, New Jersey seniors, Philly juniors, and NJ juniors. Up next is the Philadelphia sophomores:

PHILADELPHIA SOPHOMORES
MVP- Juan'ya Green

Ameen Tanksley '11, Prep Charter (PA)
Tanksley was a fill-in in the EGC, but he had a solid outing anyway. The 6'5 forward showed off an ability to run the floor well along with good speed for someone his size. In addition, he displayed some nice post moves and was able to drive to the cup well. All said, it was a stellar showing for Ameen.

John Johnson '11, Girard College HS (PA)
Johnson is an intriguing prospect to say the least. The combo guard fits best at the two because he is a score-first player, yet he is undersized at 6'1 to be a true shooting guard. Although John is confident and solid from beyond the arc, he is inconsistent too. He is a good athlete, yet has to work on his game as a whole.

Shawn Oakman '11, Pennwood (PA)
The 6'8 big man had an impressive showing on the big stage last Sunday. First off, Shawn has a good frame and is great on the offensive glass, giving him two great traits, especially for a player his age. He is a solid shooter, yet is not a great finisher down low, so that is something Oakman will need to improve on.

Jalen Bond '11, Plymouth-Whitemarsh (PA)
Bond, a 6'6 forward was solid but not spectacular at the Eddie Griffin Challenge. Jalen has a long body, which is something that makes many players his age intriguing prospects. He is not a good shooter, yet he does run the floor well. How tall Bond grows could have a lot to do with how good he becomes.

Juan'ya Green '11, Archbishop Carroll (PA)
Besides committing a lot of fouls, there were not many negatives to be seen in Green's game at the EGC. An athletic 6'2 guard, Juan'ya is a good free throw shooter and a good scorer. His scoring ability can likely be attributed to the fact that he can shoot the three well and also get to the cup. Green has a nice spin move and dribbles the ball well. Overall, Juan'ya was probably the most impressive player on the Philly team and showed why he has built up such a big reputation.

Devin Coleman '11, Friends Central (PA)
At 6'4 right now, Coleman could probably use another inch or two. Nonetheless, he was one of the top performers in the sophomore game at the 2008 EGC. A nice thing about Devin is that he can score in the post and also step outside to knock down the trey. Coleman also showed an ability to rebound the ball well.

Aquil Younger '11, West Catholic (PA)
Younger is just 6'0 right now, so it would help if he grew about one or two inches, and since he is just a sophomore it is certainly possible. In addition to growing, Aquil needs to bulk up. An aggressive player, Younger had a stellar game at the EGC for the Philly squad.

Keith Coleman '11, Cheltenham (PA)
The big man, who was a fill-in on Sunday, struggled in this game. He really did not display all that much in this one, and besides picking up a number of fouls, he did not make too much noise with his game. Many people think that Coleman is a fine player, so this was likely just a rough day for him.
