Eddie Griffin Challenge Scouting Reports- Philadelphia Juniors

by Alex Schwartz

Up next in my scouting reports from the Eddie Griffin Challenge are the Philadelphia juniors:

PHILADELPHIA JUNIORS
MVP- Markus Kennedy
Hustle/Sportsmanship Award- Tyrone Garland

Rakeem Brookins '10, Roman Catholic (PA)
Brookins, who also played in the senior game, was one of the top three players on Philly's junior squad along with Markus Kennedy and Tyrone Garland. The quick 5'11 point guard shot the rock well and displayed a nice stroke from beyond the arc. Although Rakeem did a good job of getting to the hoop, he did struggle to finish once he was there. In addition, Brookins showed that he does a good job of passing the ball.

Tyrone Garland '10, John Bartram (PA)
Garland was fantastic at the EGC. Standing 6'1, Tyrone is a solid point guard and a good athlete. He displayed an ice spin move and an ability to get to the rack. As well, Garland can knock down shots, as he is just an overall good scorer. Despite not winning MVP, Garland was one of the most impressive players at the event and definitely caught the eyes of many.

CJ Aiken '10, Plymouth-Whitemarsh (PA)
Coming in with a lot of hype, Aiken had a hard time living up to his reputation at the Eddie Griffin Challenge. The lanky 6'10 center did not do all that much, though he clearly has potential, yet right now, he is just not quite there yet. CJ is a player who will need some more experience and bulk before he becomes a real household name.

Markus Kennedy '10, Living Faith (NJ)
Given the size of 6'8 Markus Kennedy, it's hard to believe that he was somewhat quiet en route to MVP honors, but he really was. The big man did not have too many amazing plays, but rather just got things done. Markus was dominant in the post, utilizing his good hands. Kennedy also showed an ability to step out and knock down a jumper, as he is a solid shooter. The big-bodied post player also played in the senior game and had a nice overall showing at the event.

Tyree Johnson '10, Pennwood (PA)
An undersized point guard, Johnson was a fill-in for a missing player in the Eddie Griffin Challenge, but you would not have known it by watching him play. Tyree held his own throughout, and the main positive trait in his game that he displayed was an ability to get to the rack.

Travis Robinson '10, Penn Charter (PA)
Robinson was not spectacular in the EGC, but he more than held his own. The primary thing that one could observe in Travis' game was his athleticism. Besides that, nothing in particular stood out despite the overall solid showing that the 6'4 Robinson had in this one.

Dominic Morris '10, Friends Central (PA)
Interestingly, Morris actually played better in the senior game than he did in the junior affair. Dominic, a 6'7 big man, has a good frame with huge upper arms and enormous shoulders. The low post player is a good free throw shooter and does a nice job of snatching offensive rebounds.
