Commitment Updates- Jordan Hamilton, Ryan Kelly, and Thomas Robinson

by Alex Schwartz

Over the last 24 hours there have been three major commitments. Yesterday, Ryan Kelly '09 of Ravenscroft (NC) committed to Duke on ESPNU. It was expected to come down to the Blue Devils and Notre Dame for the talented power forward, and in the end, Coach K and Co. won out. The other schools Ryan considered were Georgetown, North Carolina, Wake Forest, and Vanderbilt. According to, Kelly has a 4.2 GPA and scored a 2150 on his SAT. Clearly, academics are quite important to this talented athlete, making Duke an appropriate destination for the 2008 Boost Mobile Elite 24 Classic participant. Kelly and Mason Plumlee of the Christ School (NC) are Duke's two commitments thus far in the class of 2009, and both are 6'10+ power forwards.

The other big-time pledge yesterday came from Jordan Hamilton '09, a stud small forward at Dominguez (CA). It had been said for quite some time that Hamilton was leaning towards Texas, but he had denied that to me in a June interview. As well, on Monday, Hamilton was still undecided on his destination, telling me via text message that he was still considering USC, UConn, Syracuse, and Cal in addition to the Longhorns. Well, that changed yesterday when Jordan committed to Texas. I caught up with Hamilton last night after he had announced his intentions to attend Texas, just as Northstar Basketball projected he would in both late August and early October. "Just play for a coach, [Texas Head Coach Rick Barnes, that] I know . . . has my interests [in mind], and [is] not just talking. That's what I like most about Texas," said Jordan as to why he picked the Big 12 powerhouse. In addition, Hamilton had previously said that he wanted to play college ball with Avery Bradley '09 of Findlay College Prep (NV). The top-notch shooting guard committed to Texas recently, so I asked Jordan how important the opportunity to play with Bradley was in his decision: "It's a great thing. I think we can win big." Jordan went on to say that he knows Avery from "AAU and camps, and he also was interested in Texas before [they] started actually talking." Hamilton, Bradley, and Shawn Williams of Duncanville (TX) are the Longhorns' 2009 commitments thus far.

I first saw on, that Thomas Robinson '09 of Brewster Academy (NH) has verbally committed to Kansas, just as Northstar Basketball projected. Robinson was one of the summer's biggest stock boosters, and chose the Jayhawks over the Memphis Tigers.
