News & Notes

by Alex Schwartz

- Paterson Catholic (NJ) got a lot better this week. According to ZagsBlog.net, the Garden State powerhouse added class of 2011 big man Derrick Randall. The sophomore was at Adelphi Academy (NY) last year, but was forced to transfer as the school shut its doors. Randall is a gifted post player, and is already receiving high-major college interest.

- Aaron Gowans '10 of Bloomfield Tech (NJ) is developing into a quality two-sport athlete. After having a solid summer basketball season with Team New Jersey ABC, the 6'4 small forward is already shining on the gridiron. Gowans, who suits up at middle linebacker for Irvington (NJ) because Bloomfield Tech does not have a football team, recorded six tackles and a forced fumble in the squad's first game of the year. He may have the opportunity to play either sport in college, and time will tell whether it is at the high Division II or low Division I level.

- Dave Coley '10 of Thomas Jefferson (NY) is currently being courted by eight schools: Florida Atlantic, George Mason, Providence, Hofstra, St. John's, Lehigh, Seton Hall, and Penn State. The junior point guard also told me via text message that he currently has one scholarship offer, from Hofstra, and added that his favorites are Hofstra, St. John's, and Providence.

- Point guard Karon Abraham '09 of Paterson Eastside (NJ) has committed to Robert Morris, according to ZagsBlog.net. The top-notch NEC school already has James Stukes '09 of Rice (NY) in the fold and seems to be building a solid recruiting class.
