Update on . . . Omari Lawrence- Key St. John's Commit
by Alex Schwartz
Top-notch New York talent has been going out-of-state for quite some time, but that all may be starting to change. Today, Omari Lawrence '09 of South Kent (CT) committed to St. John's. Lawrence, a quality combo guard, was previously at St. Raymond's (NY), but is transferring to the Constitution State prep powerhouse, following his friend and teammate Kevin Parrom '09 from St. Ray's and the NY Panthers U-17 squad. Lawrence told me in late July that the Red Storm was his top choice. He has followed through with that and given Norm Roberts a key verbal commitment. I had the opportunity to catch up with Omari this afternoon via text messaging.
NB: When did you actually [give your] verbal [commitment]?
OL: This afternoon.
NB: What went into your decision?
OL: I wanted to stay home. My family and I thought it was the right choice for me.
NB: Did [your NY Panthers U-17 coach] Oswald Cross getting a job there make it even more appealing?
OL: Not really. I already had interest in St. John's before Oz . . . signed any papers.
NB: Will you be talking to Kevin Parrom and trying to get him to go there too?
OL: Well that's his choice, right now I just have to focus on myself.
NB: What were your other finalists?
OL: I just had the original list.
The Red Storm have picked up a talented player in Lawrence. Not only does he bring great talent, but Omari brings credibility to Norm Roberts and Co. By grabbing the in-state baller it gives the program recognition in its attempt to come back to prominence. The team is also involved in the recruitment of Kevin Parrom '09 and Lance Stephenson '09 to name a few Empire State ballers. Could Lawrence be starting a trend? Only time will tell, but either way, this is a huge get for St. John's.
