Summer Shootout: Trenton Catholic (NJ) vs. Timber Creek (NJ)

by Alex Schwartz

Trenton Catholic is playing its fifth game of the event, as the Iron Mikes filled in for a squad that could not get to one of their games. So far the team is 3-1 with the only loss being to St. Patrick’s (NJ). Timber Creek has also lost to St. Pat’s, but the team has lost its other two contests as well, and is 0-3 so far. Two of the games were against event heavyweights St. Pat’s and Windsor (CT) and they now face another of the event’s top five teams in TCA. We’ll see if Timber Creek can pull through with a win against one of the Garden State’s top teams. The game is already well underway, and I yet again only have numbers, sorry.

8:07pm- With 1:18 left in the first half, Trenton Catholic is leading 26-25.

8:10pm- TCA is up 28-25 on Timber Creek at the half.

8:11pm- Collin Johnson ’09 and #11 each have six points for Timber Creek. Markese Tucker ’10 is the top overall scorer through 20 minutes with 10 points.

8:14pm- Just 52 seconds into the half, the Iron Mikes of Trenton Catholic have taken a three-point lead, 30-27.

8:16pm- Dondre Whitmore ’10 hit back-to-back threes to put TCA up by six, 36-30, with 16:15 to go.

8:19pm- The Iron Mikes have called a timeout with 13:56 left in regulation, leading 38-36.

8:21pm- Sloppy play by Trenton Catholic led to a turnover in the backcourt and Timber Creek seized the opportunity, scoring on a mid-range J to tie the game at 38.

8:23pm- Trenton Catholic scored as the clock hit 11:00, and the Iron Mikes now lead 42-40.

8:24pm- Frankie Smalls ’11 hit a pair of shots from the charity stripe for TCA, putting the team up 44-40 with about nine minutes to go.

8:26pm- Reggie Coleman ’09 hit a triple for TCA, who now leads 47-40 with 7:30 left. Collin Johnson then scored for Timber Creek to make it 47-42.

8:28pm- Coleman hit another trey, this one from the corner, giving the Iron Mikes an eight-point cushion, 50-42, with 6:30 left. After a Timber Creek timeout, Montez Blair ’09 scored to make it a six-point game.

8:29pm- The squads exchanged baskets, so it’s now 52-44 TCA.

8:31pm- We’ve just hit the four minute mark and Trenton Catholic still holds a 52-44 lead. An old fashioned three-point play from Frantz Massenat ’10 then gave the squad an 11-point lead.

8:32pm- Back-to-back Timber Creek baskets have led to TCA calling a timeout with 2:34 left. The Iron Mikes are up 55-48.

8:34pm- Trenton Catholic was able to waste about 60 seconds, before Markese Tucker received a pass in the low post and went up for a shot, but was fouled by Timber Creek. The foul was called intentional, so TCA gets the ball after Tucker hit both shots from the line putting the team up 57-48.

8:35pm- Tucker got back to the line, where he hit the first of two shots, giving the Iron Mikes a 10-point lead.

8:36pm- Trenton Catholic wasted the last 45 seconds of the game, and has a 58-48 win over Timber Creek.

Markese Tucker was the top scorer in the contest, dropping 15 points. Frantz Massenat had 13 points for TCA, hitting one trey, and Dondre Whitmore had 11 points for the squad, connecting on two three-balls. For Timber Creek, Collin Johnson was the main man with 14 points. #23 had 12 points for Timber Creek, making two threes. Montez Blair added nine points, hitting one three, and #1 had eight points. Northstar Basketball's MVP award winners are Markese Tucker for Trenton Catholic and Collin Johnson for Timber Creek.
