Summer Shootout: Piscataway (NJ) vs. Rancocas Valley (NJ)

by Alex Schwartz

This game should be one of the best of the whole Summer Shootout. We have two Garden State public school powerhouses from last year matching up. Rancocas Valley has lost its best player from last season, Andre Byrdsong ’08, but the squad should still be good. Piscataway also lost one of its stars from last season, Omar Smith ’08. This contest should be competitive, physical, and well-played. It has already begun, and I’ll apologize again, as I only have numbers.

4:04pm- Piscataway is leading 7-5 through five minutes of play.

4:11pm- Piscataway is up 11-8, and Rancocas Valley has just called a timeout with 9:52 to go in the first half.

4:12pm- Piscataway scored back-to-back baskets and then RV scored a deuce, making it 15-10 in favor of the Chiefs of Piscataway.

4:17pm- Piscataway has scored five straight points to double up on RV, leading 20-10.

4:18pm- After an exchange of buckets, it’s 22-12, with RV ending a 7-0 run by the Chiefs.

4:19pm- #33 of Rancocas Valley drove to the cup, making a nice move, but missed his shot. He grabbed the loose ball rebound, and went up with it, getting fouled as he did. At the line, he missed both shots.

4:21pm- With 2:15 to go in the half, Piscataway is up 24-12.

4:23pm- Two free throws from #4 of Piscataway have made it a 26-12 game in favor of the Chiefs.

4:25pm- Rancocas Valley is trailing 26-12 at the intermission. Piscataway went on a 15-4 in the last 10 minutes of the half.

4:26pm- #40 is leading Rancocas Valley with six points, while Wayne Newsom ’10 and #13 each have seven points for Piscataway. #13 has one three-pointer.

4:28pm- Newsom grabbed a defensive rebound and threw it upcourt to #4, who made a layup within the first 30 seconds of the half, putting the Chiefs up by 16.

4:29pm- The Chiefs responded to an RV free throw by scoring a deuce, making it a 19-5 run for the squad, on the way to a 30-13 lead.

4:31pm- Each team hit one free throw, so it’s now 31-14 Piscataway with 16:30 to go.

4:32pm- #2 of Piscataway went up for a dunk on the break, saw a defender behind him, adjusted in the air and laid it in, making it 33-14.

4:33pm- The next time down the floor, #2 scored and got fouled, but could not hit the free throw. It’s 35-14 Chiefs with just over 14 minutes to go. Piscataway is on a 24-6 run over the last 16 minutes.

4:34pm- A bucket by RV has cut the deficit to 19 points, 35-16.

4:35pm- Piscataway has taken a timeout with 13:17 left in the contest, leading 35-16.

4:36pm- Tristan Benjamin ’09 scored for the Chiefs to push the lead back over 20 points, 37-16. RV scored a basket soon after to cut it back down to 19.

4:37pm- A nice move by #1 has given Piscataway two more points, making it 39-18.

4:38pm- RV is starting to respond to Piscataway buckets, as the team just scored again, but then Piscataway answered. Rancocas Valley can’t afford to just trade baskets.

4:39pm- RV hit another deuce, continuing the two points each way seesaw.

4:42pm- With 6:30 to play, Piscataway is up by 23. It will take a performance equal to that of the man, Michael Jordan, who made #23 famous for RV to get back into this game, which sits at 45-22 right now.

4:44pm- Back-to-back RV buckets have made it 45-26 with about 4:30 to go in the game.

4:45pm- Aaron Hush ’09, who was not here yesterday because he was taking a visit to Pitt, one of the many schools recruiting him for football, is back today and is playing.

4:47pm- The lead is under 20 points with two minutes to go. Piscataway is ahead 45-27. A three-ball by #30 of RV has cut the lead down to 15 points, 45-30, but it’s going to be too little too late.

4:48pm- An exchange of buckets has made it 47-32 with less than 60 seconds remaining.

4:49pm- Piscataway has the win by a final score of 47-32.

The game’s top scorer was Tristan Benjamin, who had 10 points. He narrowly beat out Piscataway teammate Wayne Newsom and Rancocas Valley leading man #40, both of whom had nine points. #33 added six points for RV. Northstar Basketball’s MVP honorees from the game are Tristan Benjamin for Piscataway and #40 for Rancocas Valley.
