Summer Shootout: New Egypt (NJ) vs. Monroe (NJ)

by Alex Schwartz

New Egypt has an imposing frontline of Desmond Hubert ’11 and Kevin Janowski ’09. Standing about 6’8 and 6’7 respectively, the talented duo are not only the squad’s tallest players, they are New Egypt’s best players as well. Monroe does not have any huge guys who can handle Janowski or Hubert in the post, so the team will need to play strong defense to contain them. The game has already gotten underway, and I apologize once again for only having numbers.

8:59pm- Monroe is on a 9-0 run that has given them a 9-5 lead with 11:45 left in the first half.

9:01pm- The score is knotted up at nine with 9:30 to go in the half.

9:07pm- New Egypt is up 13-12 with 4:15 left in the half.

9:10pm- Monroe has gone on a late 5-0 run to take a 17-13 lead. Janowski, though, got fouled while shooting at the other end and hit both free throws, closing the gap to two points with just under a minute left in the half.

9:12pm- #735 of Monroe scored as time expired in the first half, giving his team a 19-15 advantage entering the break.

9:13pm- Kevin Janowski has eight points for New Egypt and #400 has eight points for Monroe, including a three.

9:14pm- Desmond Hubert and Janowski have all 15 of New Egypt’s points, as Jaowski has eight and Hubert has seven.

9:17pm- Monroe scored the first four points of the half, and then #42 hit a jumper for NE, the first player besides Hubert and Janowski to score.

9:19pm- #1 nailed a trey for Monroe, leading New Egypt to call a timeout with 15:40 to go, trailing 26-17.

9:23pm- #5 missed two free throws for Monroe, keeping the score at 26-17.

9:26pm- #20 drained a trey for NE, cutting the lead to half a dozen, 26-20, with 11 minutes to go.

9:27pm- #400 went up strong, drew contact from Janowski for a foul, hit his shot, and then made a free throw to extend the lead to nine, 29-20, with 9:30 remaining. At the other end, Janowksi scored in the paint and made it a three-point play after getting fouled.

9:28pm- #1 banged in a three for Monroe to make it a 32-23 game with about 8:15 left. At the other end, Desmond Hubert picked up his third foul.

9:30pm- Hubert will be at the line for two shots with under 6:30 to go, with his Warriors trailing by nine. The big man missed both free throws.

9:31pm- NE retained possession after the second miss by Hubert and Janowski converted it into a bucket, making it a seven-point game.

9:32pm- Janowski scored again for New Egypt, trimming the Monroe lead down to five points, 32-27, with 4:45 left. Monroe’s #400 then made two free throws at the other end to make the lead seven points again, and then NE turned the ball over.

9:33pm- Monroe has called timeout with 3:40 left, leading by seven, 34-27.

9:35pm- With three minutes left, Monroe is still up 34-27. Hubert was then called for goaltending, giving #735 a bucket to extend the lead to nine.

9:36pm- #22 then made a three for NE to cut the lead to six, 36-30. Monroe scored on a nice play at the other end, pushing its lead to eight, 38-30.

9:37pm- The Warriors have put #735 of Monroe at the line for a one-and-one with 59.2 left in regulation. He made both shots to put his team up 10, 40-30.

9:39pm- #5 is now at the line for Monroe with 46 seconds left. He missed the front end of a one-and-one. NE could not convert at the other end, and now Monroe is running out the clock.

9:40pm- Monroe has the win, 40-30.

The leading scorer in the affair was Kevin Janowski, who had 15 points. Desmond Hubert added seven points for New Egypt. For Monroe, #400 and #735 each had 13 points, with #400 knocking down a triple. #1 added nine points on three threes for Monroe. The Northstar Basketball MVP award winners from the game are KEvin Janowski for New Egypt and #400 for Monroe.
